Grant Writing Workshop - Framing your application with our review criteria in mind
On Wednesday, April 5th, 2023, we hosted a webinar to look at the grant writing process through the review criteria framework as outlined on our website. Applications from both individuals and eligible organizations shall be reviewed on the following criteria: Health Equity, to include Accessibility; Project Design; Community Engagement; and Creative Process. We talk about the importance of language around your project choices, making sure your ideas are adequately linked to Upstate Creative Corps program goals, and ways to incorporate the language of the Healthy Places Index (HPI). Knowing what category you are applying for, what program goals you wish to address and what the HPI has to say about your region are critical first steps in the grant writing process.
Upstate Creative Corps Grantwriting Workshop - Developing your Project Budget
On Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at noon we hosted a grant writing workshop focused on the development of your Creative Corps budget. An important part of the grant application process, budget development can be tricky, especially if this is not your area of expertise. Don’t worry, that’s why we’re bringing the experts to you. We will be going over the appropriate language to use and how to strategize when it comes to planning out the allocation of funds. Knowing what grant category you are applying for will affect the amount available to you. This is an important part of determining your budget. Remember that 20% may be used for program expenses, such as supplies, rentals, etc. and the remaining 80% must be used to pay the artist(s). Please take the time to review the grant guidelines, carefully consider all of your projects’ needs and incidentals, and come prepared with a rough draft of your budget.
Accessibility in the Arts | A panel discussion for Artists and Agency Applicants
A key component of Upstate Creative Corps' projects will be accessibility. We invited six panelists to join us for Accessibility in the Arts | A panel discussion for Artists and Agency Applicants. Listen to Lilyán Navarro, Angie Valetutto, Indigo Moor, Amee Medeiros, Juliette Morris Williams and Abigail Stockinger share examples of ways in which they’ve removed barriers to participation through their own practices, and when they’ve felt most at home as participants in the work of others. Listen as our panelists share examples of best practice and ideas for artists and culture bearers in all disciplines, in developing their Creative Corps project proposals. Great thanks to our fabulous ASL interpreters, Jasmine Marin and Kari O'Hara, as well as to our panelists.
Healthy Places Training
On February 23rd, 2023 Upstate Creative Corps hosted an Upstate California Healthy Places Training following the launch of the Upstate Creative Corps grant application and guidelines. The Healthy Places Index offers one method of measuring the relative health of communities, and has been shared with us by the California Arts Council as a way to gauge the potential impact of projects funded by the Creative Corps.

Opportunities for Government and Social Service Agencies
As well as inviting direct applications from artists and culture bearers, we invite applications from government departments and social service agencies who wish to employ artists. Pick an issue such as public health, water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, or emergency preparedness, relief, and recovery, or focus your sights on civic engagement, social justice and community engagement – and let’s create some awareness around it.

The WPA and the California Creative Corps with David Kipen
The Upstate California Creative Corps has now launched, offering artists and organizations, and local government departments hoping to employ artists, an opportunity to apply for funding to create awareness around issues critical to society. But where to start?!
The Creative Corps is in part modeled on the most successful components of the Federal Art Programs of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) which launched on the heels of the Great Depression a hundred-odd years ago.
We invited David Kipen, former Chair of Literature at the National Endowment for the Arts and an authority on the WPA in California, to explore with us what it means for artists to get behind and create awareness for public health, environmental issues, climate mitigation, and emergency preparedness, relief, and recovery, civic engagement and social justice.
We looked at some of California's most exciting projects from the WPA, and brainstormed the sorts of projects that artists might consider in current contexts.
